Vice President for Development and Partnerships
Universal Health Care Foundation of Connecticut seeks a Vice President for Development and Partnerships to provide strategic vision, leadership, and direction for all statewide fundraising activities.
Reporting to the Foundation President, Juan Figueroa, and working closely with him and the Executive Vice President, Frances Padilla, the Vice President of Development and Partnerships will ensure that appropriate fundraising goals are established and achieved in order to sustain the Foundation’s ongoing work and increase future impact.
In partnership with the Foundation’s leadership, the Vice President will meet two key objectives:
- reach and engage a statewide and national community of progressive funders and major donors to co-invest in the mission of the Foundation, and
- help the Foundation frame, communicate, and market its story and message of social value and impact to the national philanthropic community.
The ideal candidate for this new position will have demonstrated success in:
- working collaboratively as part of a leadership team and serving as an integral part of a strategic planning process,
- partnering with staff and volunteer leadership to establish fundraising goals, including measurable objectives, and effective strategies to support the mission of a complex organization,
- communicating with and building bridges among diverse constituencies and partners,
- networking with socially progressive people of means who can be approached to fund and co-invest in the vision the Foundation has for its work, and
- a track record of significant personal success in donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of 5-6-figure major gifts, including gifts to endowment.
It is also vital that the Vice President have a personal commitment to and passion for access to healthcare and social justice and be comfortable in the worlds of policy and politics, citizen engagement and advocacy.
Key Responsibilities
In collaboration with the Foundation’s President, leadership team, and Board, this new executive will be responsible for designing and implementing a comprehensive plan to secure the funding needed to help achieve the Foundation’s goals. This goal will be met by:
- stewarding and retaining relationships with current co-investors and philanthropic colleagues,
- building relationships with major individual donors and new national funders, particularly from the progressive community,
- identifying, cultivating and soliciting major gifts and also effectively engaging the Foundation’s leaders in the cultivation and solicitation of key prospects and donors,
- helping the Foundation effectively communicate its story to prospective funders and donors,
- monitoring and identifying funding and donor development trends and providing the leadership team and Board with regular strategic analysis to strengthen the Foundation’s ability to adapt to these trends,
- collaborating with the President and Board to strengthen and manage the Foundation’s financial sustainability,
- overseeing and monitoring all fundraising proposals, grants, cultivation of major donors, and donor information, and
- partnering with the VP for Communications on refining the Foundation brand and marketing it for development purposes.
Qualifications and Experience
The successful candidate will have many of the following qualifications:
- A track record of success in raising significant funds through major gifts (e.g., $2-5 million dollars a year)
- Active relationships and networks with major donors and national funders in the progressive fundraising world
- A proven ability to cultivate, solicit, and secure gifts in support of an institution, a candidate, or a cause, and to bring creative and effective strategies to the fundraising process, including use of social networking and social media
- A keen understanding of marketing and communications and their role in advancing the mission of the organization to the public, policymakers and funders
- Superior written and oral communication skills; clarity, crispness, and elegance in writing and speaking; the ability to influence others
- Passion for social and economic justice
- Proven skill in strategic thinking and planning, and experience with data driven, analytically rigorous decision-making
- The intellectual depth and curiosity necessary to understand the Foundation’s work of health care reform and movement building to achieve it, against the backdrop of a changing national and state context for reform
- Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to connect with and inspire people from diverse backgrounds and be a contributing member of a diverse staff
