Grant Making Information

We support organizations committed to 100% access and 0% disparities.
The Universal Health Care Foundation of Connecticut is committed to serving as a catalyst that engages people and communities in shaping a democratic health system that provides universal access to quality health care and promotes health in Connecticut. Our grant making program seeks to fund organizations that share our values and advance this mission to guarantee access to affordable, quality health care for all Connecticut residents.

For more information on past and current successful grant applicants please see our List of Grants Awarded.

How Grants Are Awarded

1. Unsolicited

Your organization may submit a Letter of Interest (LOI) at any time.
    LOI Requirements:
      a. Organizational Information Cover Sheet

      b. Text of letter (not to exceed 3 pages) must include:

      • a summary of the proposed purpose for which a grant is sought and how it would advance the Foundation’s mission and vision, and
      • the requested amount and rough budget of the proposed project, indicating projected expenses and income sources.

The program staff will review your LOI and will respond within one month of it's receipt. It is important to note that full Grant Proposals should only be submitted at the invitation of the Foundation after reviewing your LOI.  Please refer to the Grant Making Information to ensure that the LOI reflects these criteria and that your organization is eligible.

    Please submit LOIs to:

    Frances Padilla
    VP-Programs, Policy and Administration
Universal Health Care Foundation of Connecticut
    290 Pratt ST
    Meriden, CT 06450

2. Request for Proposals (RFP)

The Foundation periodically administers grant making for a specific purpose.  Selected organizations are approached to apply for funding for this specific purpose and are subject to the standard review process.

3. President’s Discretionary Grants

For events and planning projects that support the Foundation’s mission (usually less than $7,500).

4. Sponsorship

The Foundation does sponsor events that are closely related to our mission and goals. These sponsorships are funded from marketing or other program funds and are not part of the grant making program. Please contact Lola Elliott-Hugh at lelliott-hugh@universalhealthct.org for more information.

Grant Guidelines

Criteria

We evaluate full grant proposals based on the following:

How the project makes progress toward the Foundation’s four primary goals:

      1.  Build a broad “base” of public and political support to achieve universal health care in CT.

      2.  Drive the development of a concrete proposal to establish a universal health care system in CT.

      3.  Organize a statewide coalition that includes political and other leadership for the passage of universal health care in CT.

      4.  Promote a universal health care system that increases access to care for all and closes disparities in health outcomes.

The extent to which the project demonstrates:

      1.  Likelihood of advancing structural change in the health care system, with strategies based on or chosen after careful assessment and planning.

      2.  Contribution toward building statewide advocacy for universal health care access.

      3.  Collaboration and cooperation with compatible organizations.

      4.  Alignment with Foundation’s commitment of working toward universal access to health coverage and quality care.

      5.  Outreach and engagement of people not adequately or effectively served by the current health care system (e.g. working families, small businesses, the very low income, and health care professionals).

      6.  Inclusion of key components of building public awareness and support for changing the health care system, including research, outreach and education, and strategic communications.

      7.  Contribution to closing racial, ethnic, gender, language, and economic gaps.

      8.  If proposed research, link to health outcomes and to flaws in the health care system.
