Grant Making Information

We support nonprofit organizations that address critical health care issues, with an emphasis on access including eliminating racial and ethnic disparities. Universal Health Care Foundation of Connecticut is committed to being a catalyst for engaging people and communities in shaping a democratic health system. Our vision is a health care system that provides universal access to quality, affordable health care and promotes health in Connecticut. Our grant making program funds organizations that share our values and advance our mission.

How Grants Are Awarded

1. Unsolicited Grants

    Your organization may submit a Letter of Interest (LOI) at any time.
    LOI Requirements:

      a. Organizational Information Cover Sheet

      b. Text of letter (not to exceed 3 pages) must include:

      • a summary of the purpose for which a grant is sought and an explanation of how it would advance the Foundation’s mission and vision, and
      • the requested amount for the proposed project and a rough budget, with projected expenses and income sources.

    The program staff will review your LOI and will respond within one month of its receipt. Full grant proposals should be submitted only at the Foundation's invitation.

2. Solicited Grants

    The Foundation periodically awards grants for a specific purpose. Selected organizations are approached to apply for funding for this specific purpose and are subject to the standard review process.

3. President’s Discretionary Grants

    Presidential grants are used for events and projects that support the Foundation's mission. They are usually given in amounts that are less than $10,000.Please contact Lola Elliott-Hugh, Senior Aide to the President, at lelliott-hugh@universalhealthct.org for more information.

4. Sponsorships

    The Foundation sponsors events that are closely related to our mission and goals. Sponsorships are not funded through the grant-making program. Please contact Lola Elliott-Hugh, Senior Aide to the President, at lelliott-hugh@universalhealthct.org for more information.

Grant Guidelines

Criteria

    We evaluate full grant proposals based on the extent to which the project demonstrates:
    1.  Likelihood of advancing structural change in the health care system, with strategies based on or chosen after careful assessment and planning.

    2.  Contribution toward building statewide advocacy for universal health care.

    3.  Collaboration and cooperation with compatible organizations.

    4.  Alignment with the Foundation’s commitment of working toward universal health coverage and quality care.

    5.  Outreach and engagement of populations not adequately or effectively served by the current health care system (e.g. working families, small businesses, people with low incomes, and health care professionals).

    6.  Inclusion of key components of building public awareness and support for changing the health care system, such as research, outreach and education, and strategic communications.

    7.  Contribution to closing racial, ethnic, gender, language, and economic gaps.

    8.  If research is proposed, link to health outcomes and to weaknesses in the health care system.

Eligibility

    To be eligible for funding your organization must meet the following and provide appropriate documentation:

      1.  Tax exempt status under section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code.

      2.  Not a private foundation as defined in section 509 of the Internal Revenue Code.

    The Foundation does NOT fund:

      1.  Organizations whose status could impair the Foundation’s 501(c)3 designation.

      2.  Organizations with discriminatory practices

      3.  Private corporations such as religious organizations, schools or hospitals

      4.  Political candidates

      5.  Lobbyists

      6.  Direct clinical care

      7.  Capital campaigns, endowments or debt retirement.

Funding Decisions

Please use the following table to guide your timeline of applying for funding.  Notification of decisions on LOIs is typically transmitted within two months of receipt of the LOI.

Proposal Due Date

Board Meetings

Proposal due dates will be set upon discussion between applicants and the Foundation’s program staff. Funding decisions are made at board meetings.
