Advocacy

As an activist philanthropy, Universal Health Care Foundation of Connecticut strategically employs community organizing to take action. We also work in broad-based partnerships and support data-driven policy making and advocacy.

In 2006, we launched healthcare4every1, a statewide advocacy campaign that built groundswell support for health reform. Thanks to the tireless efforts of thousands of residents, many committed partner organizations and leaders, including elected officials, the campaign resulted in passage of landmark state health reform laws in 2009 and 2011.

We pushed early on for passage of the federal Affordable Care Act, anticipating the benefits and opportunities for residents and our state. Designed to rollout over the next decade, the law will bring big changes in the way residents purchase health coverage, starting in 2014.

We are deeply committed to advocacy for the effective implementation of the new reforms and maximizing the opportunities they bring for improving quality, controlling costs and innovating transformative change.

  • ACA Workshops and Trainings

These interactive group trainings are designed to demystify the Affordable Care Act and guide people through the next big step of implementation. The  state’s health insurance marketplace, Access Health CT, which offers new opportunities for individuals, families and small businesses to get health coverage, opens  in January 2014.

  • Health Care Film Forums

The award-winning film documentary “Escape Fire: The Fight to Rescue American Healthcare” is being shown at public libraries and other venues across the state, followed by facilitated group discussions on ways to improve health care and achieve better health. We are coordinating these free showings with the Connecticut Library Consortium and other community partners.

  • Consumer Input

We are engaging consumers to ensure their voices are heard in the state discussion on how the new health insurance marketplace, Access Health CT, is working for people in real life.

  • Digital Advocacy

We use digital technology to reach out to, inform, educate and help mobilize concerned people around health reform issues and to help support our mission.
